Resources - The Rope Prayer

This page has some general concepts that you may find useful.

There are also some limited copyright issues, which are towards the bottom of that page here. Please do read them. They are not complex!

I also make some comments about the source of material - again please read, especially if you recognise your material! I mean no offense.

There is also an Alphabetical list of resources here

We originally did this as part of a Celebration at Grapevine in 2009.  It was popular then, and is still a popular drama / prayer.

Method

  1. Obtain a rope or a bit of solid string etc. that is going to be long enough to go round everyone! Try to anchor one end to something solid!  But this is not essential.
  2. With a colleague, get them to hold one end, and you the other. Pull gently on the rope, and on your word (!) get them to let go, and, without hurting yourself, make a thing of falling, or stumbling etc!
  3. Explain that the rope represents that Jesus is safe and secure and that he will NEVER let us go. We can trust Him.
  4. Arrange the rope and people so that everyone can get a hold of a bit.  If you are able to tie it something solid, so much the better - it will reinforce the point.  We made a great big anchor and tied it to that on one occasion!
  5. Explain the response and what it means - "We hope in you, and hang on to You."

The prayer

When life is hard and we cannot see the future:

We hope in you, and hang on to You

When everyone around us laughs at us

We hope in you, and hang on to You

When everything we do seems to go wrong

We hope in you, and hang on to You

When we are ill and not feeling well, and feeling fed up and tired

We hope in you, and hang on to You

When we are sad and miserable and want to cry

We hope in you, and hang on to You

When we are feeling lonely or far away from our friends

We hope in you, and hang on to You

When times are good and we start to forget You

We hope in you, and hang on to You

Amen
